Silly Walk for Hunger
In November, Mashcast partnered with Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, along with many sponsors - Kodak included - to raise awareness and money to prevent hunger. But leave it to Mashcast (who you might remember from the awesome invite and intro mashups they created for the 140 Characters Conference) - to find a way to not only use all those technologies to make it happen - but to use the humor of Monty Python to make it exciting and fun! They turned Universal City Walk into Universal Silly Walk for a night with the very first Silly Walks for Hunger event.
Mashcast described the event best:
On Thursday, November 19th, hundreds of flash mobbers and Monty Python lovers swarmed the length of Universal CityWalk Hollywood in the first-ever SillyWalks for Hunger, kicking of a hunger relief initiative with a goal of providing one million meals to families, children and elderly in need.
Universal CityWalk visitors were taken by surprise... when the music was interrupted with that famous line, "Now for something completely different." The line queued a flash mob that was a funky mix of hip dance and silly walking, inspired by the famous Monty Python sketch "The Ministry of Silly Walks" and choreographed by star creative directors Rich & Tone.
SillyWalks for Hunger was a first in the hot-trending flash mob phenomenon, as it was executed with an intention to not just to entertain, but to bring attention to a critical issue: hunger. It was a flash mob with a cause. The Los Angeles Regional Foodbank was on site to receive nonperishable food donations, while a text-to-give initiative was kicked off right in the midst of the event, when participants raised their cell phones to text the word FEED to 90999 to make a $5 donation to Feeding America.
Through social networking and community building technologies such as represented and leveraged by MashCast, the producers of SillyWalks for Hunger expect to drive the initiative forward online until the mission is accomplished. Find out more by visiting www.SillyWalksForHunger.com. SillyWalks for Hunger is sponsored by MashCast, the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, A&E Home Entertainment, Spam, Kodak and others; it is produced and presented by MashCast, the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club and Rich & Tone Productions.
Here's how the Mashmob action at the event went down (much of it captured using Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video cameras):
Kodak also donated many cameras that were awarded both on the radio before the event, at the event, and as part of gift baskets that were auctioned off to benefit Feeding America and the LA Food Bank.
Jon Lovitz raffled off Kodak cameras and auctioned gift baskets containing Kodak Pocket Video cameras, for Feeding America and the LA Food Bank.

Overall, a wonderful, fun event for a great cause.
And whether you are a Monty Python fan from way back and very familiar with it - or it's totally new to you - you must check out the "Ministry of Silly Walks" sketch, again and again - as it is ALWAYS sure to bring a smile to your face - and put a spring (or more) in your step!!
Happy New Year - Are you a Zombie today?
Send friends a fun Howcast video in Facebook where Drex (Jon Heder) and Cassie (Krysten Ritter) - from the webisode Woke Up Dead - suspect your friends of also being a zombie like Drex.
It's also pretty fun to put your friends' fave photo into the zombie poster they get tagged in with a link to their video.
Check out my video or create your own and send it to your friends to see if they Woke Up Dead today!
And after you've recovered from New Year's Eve festivities, be sure to become a fan of Kodak on Facebook and tell us what will make you smile in 2010!
Happy New Year!
Run, Hide - Santa Claus is Coming to Town!
As someone who has an "uncomfortableness" around mascots and people in costume at times other than Halloween (yes, I mean you Klingon guy who wouldn't break character at the Hilton Star Trek exhibit in Las Vegas circa 1998), I can't say I'm totally fond of Santa myself... but of course we must take the little one to see Santa - capture the memories of the holiday, keep tradition alive, get a photo for the Christmas card and, with any luck, not pass along my "uncomfortableness" to my daughter Lauren.
You can see in this pic from 2007, she was not so sure about this jolly fellow.

Not horrified, but not thrilled. Some kids are, in fact, completely horrified - check out these hilarious "Scared of Santa" photo galleries from the Chicago Tribune and from the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
This year, with Lauren two years older and having a more clear understanding of how important it is that Santa know what you want for Christmas... she was much happier to see him... but this year he was NOT a jolly fellow. This year Lauren had a huge smile and Santa was miserable.

Santa needs a vacation
And so... this is my Christmas card photo - wishing everyone a happier Christmas than this Santa was having.
Here's hoping next year is filled with smiles from both Lauren AND Santa.
And here's hoping your Christmas is filled with smiles of your own! Merry Christmas everyone!
Behind the Scenes of Woke Up Dead
Earlier this fall when they were shooting some additional footage for the series for a coming-soon Facebook video, I had a chance to watch the production process and meet Jon and Krysten. Both were very sweet and down to earth - and very good at what they do!

The very expressive Krysten Ritter
For this shoot, Jon and Krysten were using a Kodak camera and printer - I stood behind the scenes discreetly snapping photos with the Kodak Z980 - couldn't use the flash so as not to disrupt the shoot - but the pics still came out great.

It was fun to be on the set during the shoot, though a bit stressful in that you had to be very quiet! I had to turn off the camera sounds - not to mention suppress must-be-quiet-coughs - you know, when you've been fine but as soon as you have to be super quiet, feel the need to have a coughing attack. I also met Emmy-nominated director, Stan Rogow. Stan was kind and soft-spoken but with a keen ear and eye for the intent of the scene.
During lunch break, I sat with Jon and Krysten - Jon showed off pictures of his daughter and new weeks-old baby, so adorable!
After the shoot, Jon and Krysten took some time to sit with me and talk about Kodak moments and what makes them smile.
And if you missed them, be sure to check out all the Woke Up Dead episodes.
Behind the Scenes at Big Break Disney Golf
I watched as contestants were surprised by PGA TOUR Pro J.B. Holmes, who set the parameters for the contestants' challenges. The Kodak episode featured the break-the-glass challenge - which is very dramatic to watch. What you don't see is that after each golfer, the assistants run out and clean up all that broken glass in a matter of minutes! Then J.B. took a couple shots at the pin on hole #17 which they used to draw target circles and the contestants got points for hitting within the circles. Finally the contestants had a 10' putt to complete the challenge. Andrew Giuliani pulled out the win and I got a chance to speak with him after his win:
After the episodes are filmed, the contestants go back and prepare for their confessionals. The guys hung out in a common room at the hotel where they could relax with some TV, ping pong, review their swing sequences and make phone calls to home. I took this opportunity to ask one of our favorite questions - What's a Kodak Moment in Your Life - or in this case, in Golf? The guys had some really great answers!
Be sure to tune in to Big Break Disney Golf every Tuesday at 10pm to find out who wins a chance to play on the Kodak Challenge hole at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course as part of the Children's Miracle Network Classic in 2010! Good luck guys - and keep those Kodak Moments coming! Here are some more photos from behind the scenes:

Kevin Streelman Wins Inaugural Kodak Challenge

What an exciting week this has been! Kevin Streelman headed in to the finale hole - #17 at the Children's Miracle Network Classic on Disney's Magnolia Golf Course - with a 2-stroke lead over Bo Van Pelt, J.J. Henry and Nathan Green. Given that hole #17 is a 485-yard par 4, over water and large trees - that hadn't seen an eagle since 1988 - this seemed to be a lock, but Kevin Streelman was not taking anything for granted. Bo Van Pelt was in the field and he wasn't going to let the win go without a fight (Henry and Green did not play CMN).
The Kodak Challenge hole itself looked amazing! Disney did such a wonderful job highlighting the hole, the competition and the Kodak Moments.

The excitement started almost immediately on Thursday because while both Kevin and Bo were playing Palm course that day - Charles Warren scored EAGLE on the Kodak Challenge hole for the first time in 11 years! Surely this made both Kevin and Bo take notice! Bo had chance at an eagle on Friday and the only way Kevin could seal the deal right away would be to birdie the hole.
As we stood there in the Kodak Challenge tent waiting for Kevin's approach shot, I was filled with excitement and anticipation that after so long we may finally have a winner - and having met Kevin and his wife Courtney earlier in the year, knew that it would go to a gracious, deserving person.
Kevin was down mid fairway, I looked away for a second and then, UGH - a ball hit the bleachers to the left of the green. My heart sank a bit, he'd have to wait another day to try for the win... then I came to my senses - of course that WASN'T Kevin's shot! It was Johnny Damon! The NY Yankees superstar - who was one of the amateurs playing with Kevin in the pro-am - had hit what in baseball might have been a home run. WHEW! Kevin hit next and it landed very near the hole - within four feet. The Kodak tent went wild with cheers!! Excellent birdie opportunity here!
Kevin waited patiently for the other players to finish, then lined up his putt with the help of his caddy, Michael Collins. Breath held. Putt... going... going.. IT'S IN!!! WOO HOO!! The crowd went wild! Kevin did some fist pumps, hi fived his caddy, then - as he heard the whoops coming from the Kodak tent (myself included) he ran over, jumped up and hi fived all of us! It was a picture perfect Kodak Moment!

After finishing his play for the day, Kevin emerged from the scoring tent to cheers, hugs from family and the awarding of the Kodak Challenge trophy and "giant check".

It's been an amazing year with a very exciting finish. As Kodak's Steve Powell said, "We very pleased with the tremendous success of the Kodak Challenge in just its first year. I don't think we could ask for a better ambassador than Kevin Streelman as our very first champion. We're excited for Kevin and very happy to have him associated with Kodak."
Kevin's name will always be the very first on that beautiful trophy, a well deserved win for a great champion!
